Bernice trailed off. There were now four skulls, but their voices had become virtually unified.

The expectant tone reminded her of Peter, and bedtimes passed. Bernice felt a smile pass across the corner of her mouth. Then she remembered where she was, and that she couldn’t exactly tell her to turn the light out and go to sleep.

Turn the light out. Another thought began to push itself forwards, but she didn’t want to address that little anecdote just yet. That one was far, far worse than any embarrassment.

The skulls looked expectant.

‘OK, if you insist.’ She pointed her trowel at them disapprovingly. ‘But if you ever tell anyone about this…’
